Gift cards are Ireland's favourite Christmas gift

A survey conducted by Carton House has revealed that gift cards, hotel gift cards to be precise, are the gift of choice this Christmas ahead of a present or even money. The survey conducted through Survey Monkey interviewed 100 respondents in December 2018

The survey, which delved into the gift card purchasing habits of consumers in the lead up to the busiest shopping weeks of the year also revealed that gift cards are top of shoppers list this Christmas with 84% of respondents saying they regularly purchase gift cards for loved ones. In fact, 50% of respondents revealed plans to purchase between 2-4 gift cards this Christmas.
 
In terms of spend, it seems Ireland is generous ‘gifters’ as 30% of those surveyed said they are likely to spend an average of €100 – €200 on gift cards whilst 33% said they would spend an average of €200 – €300 in total on gift cards during the festive season.
 
When asked whether gift cards could be viewed as a cop out when unsure what to buy that someone special at Christmas time, 98% of those surveyed disagreed saying they put as much thought into purchasing a gift card as they do any present. 

Respondents suggested they choose carefully, picking a gift card for a hotel / resort/shop or experience they know the recipient will love and can spend exactly as they wish. Furthermore, 61% prefer to purchase a gift card in-store as opposed to simply purchasing online (39%).
